A browser editor for the Roland SPD-SX

SPD-SX Editor edits a Roland SPD-SX sampling pad directly from the browser: no download, no installation, no account. Connect the unit over USB, pick its volume, and edit kits and samples the way Roland's SPD-SX Wave Manager did. It is free.

Why it exists

Roland's Wave Manager (version 1.04, the last release) no longer runs on current macOS: on macOS 27 it crashes at launch. The SPD-SX itself stores everything as small files on its USB volume, so a web app can read and write them in place. That is what this editor does, on Mac, Windows, Linux and ChromeOS alike.

What it edits

Every change is staged and listed in plain words before it is written, and every written file is read back and checked.

How to connect

  1. On the SPD-SX, set MENU → SETUP → OPTION → USB MODE to WAVE MGR and connect the USB cable.
  2. Wait for the SPD-SX volume to appear on your computer.
  3. Pick that volume in the editor and allow read and write access.
  4. When you are done, eject the volume so the unit reloads its kits.

Browser support

Editing needs the File System Access API with write access, which exists in Chromium browsers on desktop computers.

Questions

Is anything uploaded?
No. The app reads and writes the unit's USB volume in the browser. There is no server and no account, and nothing is tracked.
Can it break my SPD-SX?
It writes the same files Wave Manager wrote, and offers a full backup zip first. Restoring is copying the backup back onto the volume. Still, back up before the first write.
Does it work with the SPD-SX Special Edition or the SPD-SX PRO?
It is made for and tested on the Roland SPD-SX. The Special Edition has not been tested. The SPD-SX PRO is a different instrument and is not supported.
Which sample formats can I import?
Anything your browser can decode: WAV, AIFF, MP3, M4A, FLAC and more. Files are converted to the 44.1 kHz 16-bit WAV the unit plays.
